About Tarifa and Bolonia

Tarifa, located at the southernmost tip of Spain, is a charming coastal town where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, whitewashed old town, and rich cultural heritage, Tarifa is a favourite destination for windsurfers, nature lovers, and those seeking a blend of history and natural beauty. The town's proximity to Africa, just across the Strait of Gibraltar, adds a unique and international character.

A short drive from Tarifa lies Bolonia Beach, one of the most unspoiled and picturesque beaches in Andalusia. Surrounded by dunes, pine forests, and the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Baelo Claudia, Bolonia offers a peaceful escape immersed in nature. With its crystal-clear waters and wide sandy shore, it is a perfect spot for relaxation, hiking, or exploring archaeological treasures.

The White House Tarifa History

This building was constructed in 1869 as the control center for the merchant marine overseeing maritime traffic in the Strait of Gibraltar. Even at that time, it proved to be an exceptional and important station, equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

In the Madrid newspaper "El Globo," in issue number 665 on August 6, 1877, the following was reported: "In this station, all currently known telegraphic systems are used, and the best telescopes and the most modern equipment of the present time are in use." This mention underscores the significance and technological advancement associated with this building.

The control center played a crucial role in monitoring maritime traffic in the Strait of Gibraltar, thus contributing to the safety and efficiency of commercial shipping. With this historical background, the building serves as a testament to bygone times and a fascinating blend of history and modern utility.

After the building was abandoned, it gradually fell into a state of disrepair over the years, becoming a hazardous ruin. Children played hide and seek within its deserted walls until the property came under private ownership in the 1990s. It was lovingly and carefully renovated in the Andalusian style and now shines anew.

In 2018, the Organization for Science, Education, and Global Society (OSEGS) moved into the building. They use the premises as a location for scientific and sustainable projects. Since then, various rooms in the house have been offered to interested guests who can identify with the philosophy of the house and seek a peaceful retreat in nature.

Since 2023, the White House has been home to the Global Society Institute (GSI). The GSI is an academic institution with the goal of promoting a global society for sustainable development. The institute brings together individuals and organizations actively shaping the future of civil society, initiating projects in line with the United Nations' Global Goals, and conducting research and education on current issues of global society.

In the past as well as today, the White House stands for connecting people across the boundaries of continents!
